Building Ethos in Online Courses


The article explores the possibilities of employing Aristotelian ethos to describe and put in order some practices and recommendations concerning building online courses. By ethos I understand the teacher’s character and the students’ perception of his/her character. In the case of online courses, this ethos is build simultaneously by a human teacher and by messages sent by a “computer”. I attempt to describe this process, linking particular actions to Aristotelian concepts: areté, phronêsis or eunoia. My aim is both to delineate the process and to draw some practical conclusions as to course building and formulating recommendations for teachers.
