The Practice of Using Automated Assessment Tools in the Programming Skills Development System – the First Empirical Results


The automated assessment tools are part of the Programming Skills Development System (PSDS), created and implemented in the Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology. These tools are used in teaching of eight programming courses in various kinds of studies. The article presents first experiences and results of using the automated assessment. There are few questions addressed: whether and how it is helpful for students? whether and how it improves teaching experience? how it can affect the way of teaching and what are the advantages and disadvantages of different possible teaching models that use the automated assessment? Particular attention will be paid on the teaching models that include elements of distance learning. Analysis will be based on the results of surveys conducted among students and teachers as well as on empirical statistics obtained from the processing of large data sets, containing the assessment results.
